Hi All at CAESSR,
Well 6 months have flown by since we collected Barney, here’s an update on how things have gone.
Barney has continued to settle in really well and has become one of the family. He is such a lovely well behaved dog and is very friendly to everyone he meets, he is now well known in our village.
Although we don’t leave him on his own that often he has been left for up to three hours without any problems.
We have had two holidays with Barney and both went extremely well. He loves the sea and was very good overnight.
He is ball mad and I suspect his preference are in this order
1) Ball
2) Food
3) Walks.
Like our previous dog he has cottoned on to the fact that our postman carries treats and now knows his delivery time and will go to meet him. He has been to our local dog groomers twice without any problems and is well liked by the groomer and gets on well with her dog.
Re the aggression towards other dogs, which you did advise us about, we did have a couple of incidents in the early days which came about suddenly and unexpectedly, he had previously met other dogs without incident, so it does appear to be a bit unpredictable, we do suspect it occurs when another dog sniffs round his rear end. We have established a routine to manage the situation. We decided to keep him under strict control when taking him out, we keep him on a lead when taking him on walks and if we meet up with other dog walkers we keep him a couple of meters away, when he is on the lead he is not aggressive unless another dog shows aggression first. Most dogs we meet he always shows an interest in them and when we have a chat with another dog walker he is usually quite relaxed. We haven’t had any incidents now for the last five months and he has got on with the groomers dog and my sisters dog after introductions also he is better if he is distracted with a ball. As he is such a great dog with people it’s worth spending a bit more time and effort in overcoming his problem with other dogs. We love him to bits so he’s worth it.
Kind regards,
Paul & Dianne
Hello CAESSR,
I read on your website that you like to hear about your adopted dogs. Attached is a photo of Charlie who we adopted in 2012. He was a rather troubled boy but love and cuddles have persuaded him to be the most adorable and loving dog.
Two years ago he suffered a blown disc in his neck which left him paralysed in all 4 limbs. 6 weeks in Cambridge vet hospital, major surgery, months of physio and hydrotherapywith home nursing taught him to walk again.
He is now very active, has lots of adventures and has just celebrated his 13th birthday.
Charlie is our brave, miracle dog and is so loved.
Thank you CAESSR for giving us Charlie and for all you do for other spaniels.
